Cosmetology, Diploma (CO12) (120401) Diploma
The Cosmetology program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for careers in the field of cosmetology. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, state laws, rules, and regulations, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, skin, hair, and nail diseases and disorders, hair treatments and manipulations, hair shaping, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, chemical reformation and application, skin and nail care, hair coloring, hair lightening, reception, sales, management, math, reading, writing, interpersonal relations development, computer skills, employability skills, and work ethics. The curriculum meets state licensing requirements of the State Board of Cosmetology. Program graduates receive a Cosmetology diploma and are employable as a cosmetology salesperson, cosmetologist, salon manager, or a salon owner.
Length of Program: Four (4) Semesters
Entrance Date: Beginning of each semester.

Age: N/A
Education: An applicant must be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED). College transcripts will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Advisor: A Program Advisor should be consulted prior to enrolling in any course. An advisor will be assigned by admissions.
Program Final Exit Point: Cosmetology, Diploma.
Credits Required for Graduation: 58 minimum semester hour credits required for graduation.

Pre-requisite(s): Entrance exam reading and writing scores in accordance with approved TCSG admission score levels Presents basic concepts within the field of psychology and their application to everyday human behavior, thinking, and emotion. Emphasis is placed on students understanding basic psychological principles and their application within the context of family, work and social interactions. Topics include an overview of psychology as a science, the nervous and sensory systems, learning and memory, motivation and emotion, intelligence, lifespan development, personality, psychological disorders and their treatments, stress and health, and social psychology. |

Pre-requisite(s): Appropriate Placement Test Score Emphasizes concepts and operations which are applied to the study of algebra. Topics include basic mathematical concepts, basic algebraic concepts, and intermediate algebraic concepts. |

This course is designed to provide tools to assist students to acquire skills necessary to achieve academic and professional success in their chosen occupational/ technical program of study. Topics include: Getting off to a Good Start, Learning and Personality Styles, Time and Money Management, Study and Test Taking Skills, Stress Management and Wellness, Communications Skills, Career Exploration, Research Skills, College Campus Knowledge, Memory & Reading Skills, Presentation & Interview Skills, and Group Skills. Effective Fall 2016, students who already have an Associate Degree or higher will be given exemption credit for the COLL 1500 course. |

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission Introduces fundamental theory and practices of the cosmetology profession. Emphasis will be placed on professional practices and safety. Topics include: state rules and regulations; state regulatory agency; image; bacteriology; decontamination and infection control; chemistry fundamentals; safety; Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance; and anatomy and physiology. |

COSM 1010Chemical Texture Services
Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Provides instruction in the chemistry and chemical reactions of permanent wave solutions and relaxers, application of permanent waves and relaxers. Precautions and special problems involved in applying permanent waves and relaxers will be emphasized. Topics include: permanent wave techniques, chemical relaxer techniques, chemistry, physical and chemical change, safety procedures, permanent wave and chemical relaxer application procedures, hair analysis, scalp analysis, permanent wave procedures (in an acceptable time frame), relaxer application (in an acceptable time frame), and Hazardous Duty Standards Act Compliance. |

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the theory, procedures and products used in the care and treatment of the scalp and hair, disease and disorders and their treatments and the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo, condition, and recondition the hair and scalp. |

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the theory and skills necessary to apply haircutting techniques, advanced haircutting techniques, proper safety and decontamination precautions, hair design elements, cutting implements, head, hair and body analysis, and client consultation. |

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the fundamental theory and skills required to create shapings, pin curls, fingerwaves, roller placement, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, and comb-outs. Laboratory training includes styling training on manikin. Topics include: braiding/intertwining hair, styling principles, pin curls, roller placement, fingerwaves, skip waves, ridge curls, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, comb-outs, and safety precautions. |

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the theory and application of temporary, semipermanent, demipermanent-deposit only, and permanent hair coloring, hair lightening, and color removal products and application. Topics include: principles of color theory, hair structure, color, tone, classifications of color, hair lightening, color removal, application procedures, safety precautions, client consultation, product knowledge, haircolor challenges, corrective solutions, and special effects. |

COSM 1060Fundamentals of Skin Care
Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 This course provides a comprehensive study in care of the skin for theory and practical application. Emphasis will be placed on client consultation, safety precautions, skin conditions, product knowledge, basic facials, facial massage, corrective facial treatments, hair removal, and make-up application. Other topics in this course include advanced skin treatments in electrotherapy, light therapy, galvanic current, high frequency, and microdermabrasion. |

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Provides training in manicuring, pedicuring and advanced nail techniques. Topics include: implements, products and supplies, hand and foot anatomy and Physiology, diseases and disorders, manicure techniques, pedicure techniques, nail product chemistry, safety precautions and practices, and advanced nail techniques (wraps/tips/acrylics). |

COSM 1080Physical Hair Services Practic
Pre-requisite(s): COSM 1000, COSM 1010, COSM 1020, COSM 1030, COSM 1040, COSM 1060 Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1050, COSM 1070 Provides laboratory experiences necessary for the development of skill levels required to be a competent cosmetologist. The allocation of time to the various phases of cosmetology is required by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. This course includes a portion of the required hours for licensure. Topics include: scalp and hair treatments; haircutting; styling; dispensary; reception; safety precautions/decontamination; and Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance. |

COSM 1090Hair Services Practicum I
Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1050, COSM 1070, COSM 1080 This course provides laboratory experiences necessary for the development of skill levels required to be a competent cosmetologist. The allocation of time to the various phases of cosmetology is prescribed by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. This course includes a portion of the hours required for licensure. Topics include: permanent waving and relaxers; hair color, foiling, lightening, hair and scalp treatments; haircutting; clipper design, precision cutting, styling; dispensary; reception; safety precautions/decontamination; Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance; product knowledge, customer service skills, client retention, State Board Rules and Regulations guidelines, and State Board foundation prep. |

Emphasis will be placed on the display of professional conduct and positive attitudes. The appropriate number of applications for completion of state board service credit requirements for this course may be met in a laboratory setting. Topics include: texture services; permanent waving and relaxers; hair color and lightening; hair and scalp treatment; haircutting; styling; dispensary; reception; safety precautions/ decontamination; and Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance. |
