Students with disabilities have equal access to courses, programs, services, jobs, activities, and facilities available through Southern Regional Technical and must meet the college’s qualifications and essential technical, academic, and institutional standards

Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), colleges must provide “reasonable accommodations” to make their programs accessible to students with disabilities.

Disability service accommodations are free to students. Section 504 and the ADA use the term “auxiliary aids and services” to refer to devices and services that make programs and materials available to people with disabilities.

Accessibility Services provides students who have a documented disability with accommodations to aid them in the learning process at SRTC. Documentation includes but is not limited to:

  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Report
  • Verification Forms signed by a licensed professional
  • 504/IEP no older than 2 years

The Director of Accessibility and Compliance, Darbie Raines, meets with students to gather information about their academic experiences and how the accommodations requested are necessary for removing barriers to programs or services. It is recommended that students request accommodations at the beginning of the semester as accommodations are not retroactive.

Once it has been determined that a student is eligible for accommodations, the instructor will receive a faculty notification plan. This plan will inform instructors as to the accommodations a student will be given in each class. Accommodations will never alter the nature of the program or lower the academic standard. Instructors will not receive specific information or documentation regarding the student’s disability.

SRTC faculty and staff are prohibited from asking a student or a prospective student if a disability exists.

As set forth in its Southern Regional Technical College Catalog and Student Handbook, Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national or ethnic origin, gender, religion, disability, age, political affiliation or belief, genetic information, veteran status, or citizenship status (except in those special circumstances permitted or mandated by law).
