The Commercial Truck Driving Technical Certificate of Credit provides basic training in the principles and skills of commercial truck operations. The program is based on the definition of a truck driver as one who operates a commercial motor vehicle of all different sizes and descriptions on all types of roads. The CTD program prepares students for the Georgia CDL Skills Exam. All CDL testing is done under contract with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS). CDL testing is administered by DDS certified 3rd party examiners under the direction of the Georgia DDS. Each testing location in randomly audited several times each year to ensure compliance.

Length of Program: 10 weeks

Entrance Date: Every 5 weeks within each semester

Age: Must be 18 years of age or older.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is not required for application, admission, or graduation.

Advisor: A Program Advisor must be consulted prior to enrolling in the Commercial Truck Driving program. An advisor will be assigned by admissions.

Additional CTD Admission Requirements: In addition to completing all SRTC admissions procedures, all incoming commercial driving students must meet the following criteria:

  • Students under 21 years of age must complete an acknowledgement form stating that they understand the restrictions on employment and training opportunities in the trucking industry.
  • Students must provide a seven-year Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) from the Georgia Department of Driver Services. The MVR must be approved by the program advisor prior to registration.
  • Students must have a valid Georgia’s drivers license and have no more than four points or two moving violations in the last 12 months. Furthermore, applicants can have no more than one DUI, Controlled Substance, or Open Container conviction, and none in the past 5 years.
  • Students must have a Class A permit to register.
  • Students must adhere to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations. Therefore, random drug and alcohol testing is mandatory during the course of this program.

This program qualifies for the HOPE Career Grant:
To qualify, a student must be fully admitted to the college and receive the HOPE Grant for the same term. The amount of the HOPE Career Grant award is a fixed amount for each term of enrollment: Commercial Truck Driving = $1,000.00. High School students in dual enrollment and joint enrollment are NOT eligible.

Credits Required for Graduation: 9 minimum semester hour credits required for graduation.

Note: Credits from this program may be applied to a degree or a diploma program.

CTDL 1010

Pre-requisite(s): Class B CDL Permit and qualified 7-year Motor Vehicle Report Fundamentals of Commercial Driving introduces students to the transportation industry, federal and state regulations, records and forms, industrial relations, and other non-driving activities. This course provides an emphasis on safety that will continue throughout the program. Students must obtain a Class A CDL permit from the Georgia Department of Driver Services to proceed to the next CTDL course (CTDL 1020).

CTDL 1021

Pre/Co-Requisite(s): CTDL 1010 This course familiarizes students with truck instruments and controls and performing basic maneuvers required to drive safely in a controlled environment and on the Driving Range. Each student must demonstrate proficiency in performing range operations such as operating a tractor trailer through clearance maneuvers, backing, turning, parallel parking and coupling/uncoupling.

CTDL 1022

Co-requisite(s): CTDL 1010 This course familiarizes students with truck instruments and controls and performing basic maneuvers required to drive safely in a controlled environment and on the Driving Range. Each student must demonstrate proficiency in performing range operations such as operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) through clearance maneuvers, backing, turning, parallel parking and coupling/uncoupling as applicable for the vehicle class. Internship training will be facilitated by an employer, the training hours will be documented, and proficiency will be signed off by the college ELDT partner.

CTDL 1031

Pre/Co-Requisite(s): CTDL 1020 Advanced Operations develops students’ driving skills under actual road conditions. The classroom part of the course stresses following safe operating practices. These safe operating practices are integrated into the development of driving skills on the road. Each student must demonstrate proficiency in required behind-the-wheel (BTW) skills such as operating a commercial vehicle safely on public roads through a variety of maneuvers.

CTDL 1032

This course familiarizes students with truck instruments and controls and performing basic maneuvers required to drive safely in a controlled environment and on the Driving Range. Each student must demonstrate proficiency in performing range operations such as operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) through clearance maneuvers, backing, turning, parallel parking and coupling/uncoupling as applicable for the vehicle class. Internship training will be facilitated by an employer, the training hours will be documented, and proficiency will be signed off by the college ELDT partner.
