Commercial Truck Driving, TCC (CT61) (490205)  Technical Certificate of Credit

Campus Locations: Tifton, Bainbridge

The Commercial Truck Driving Technical Certificate of Credit provides basic training in the principles and skills of commercial truck operations. The program is based on the definition of a truck driver as one who operates a commercial motor vehicle of all different sizes and descriptions on all types of roads. The CTD program prepares students for the Georgia CDL Skills Exam.

All students who enter the Commercial Truck Driving training program are subject to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) as they apply to the professional driver. Each student's file must contain copies of the driver's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), DOT Physical, and a NIDA 5 DOT drug screen before they can operate a commercial vehicle on public roads. All CDL testing is done under contract with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS). CDL testing is administered by DDS certified 3rd party examiners under the direction of the Georgia DDS. Each testing location in randomly audited several times each year to ensure compliance.

Length of Program: 7 ½ Weeks

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will perform an inspection on a tractor-trailer vehicle and ensure the air brake system is safe to operate.
  • Students will safely back and turn a tractor-trailer using mirrors.
  • Students will perform advanced maneuvers on highway and city streets using a tractor-trailer vehicle.

Entrance Date: Beginning and midterm of fall and spring semesters and beginning (only) of each summer semester.

Age: Must be 18 years of age or older.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is not required for application, admission, or graduation.

Advisor: A Program Advisor must be consulted prior to enrolling in the Commercial Truck Driving program. An advisor will be assigned by admissions.

Additional CTD Admission Requirements: Prospective students should be advised that the FMCSA regulates commercial driver licensing and requires a DOT physical and drug test and satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR) priornto the issuance of a CDL or learners permit, which is required prior to beginning in-the-truck training. Further, random drug testing is required during the course of the CTD program.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Testing Program

This program qualifies for the HOPE Career Grant:
To qualify, a student must be fully admitted to the college and receive the HOPE Grant for the same term. The amount of the HOPE Career Grant award is a fixed amount for each term of enrollment: Commercial Truck Driving = $1,000.00. High School students in dual enrollment and joint enrollment are NOT eligible.

Program Final Exit Point: Commercial Truck Driving, Technical Certificate of Credit.

Credits Required for Graduation: 9 minimum semester hour credits required for graduation.

Note: Credits from this program may be applied to a degree or a diploma program.

CTDL 1010

Pre-requisite(s): Seven-year Motor Vehicle Report Fundamentals of Commercial Driving introduces students to the transportation industry, federal and state regulations, records and forms, industrial relations, and other non-driving activities. This course provides an emphasis on safety that will continue throughout the program. Students must obtain a Class A CDL permit from the Georgia Department of Driver Services to proceed to the next CTDL course (CTDL 1020).

CTDL 1020

Pre/Co-Requisite(s): CTDL 1010 This course familiarizes students with truck instruments and controls and performing basic maneuvers required to drive safely in a controlled environment and on the Driving Range. Each student must demonstrate proficiency in performing range operations such as operating a tractor trailer through clearance maneuvers, backing, turning, parallel parking and coupling/uncoupling.

CTDL 1030

Pre/Co-Requisite(s): CTDL 1020 Advanced Operations develops students’ driving skills under actual road conditions. The classroom part of the course stresses following safe operating practices. These safe operating practices are integrated into the development of driving skills on the read. Each student must demonstrate proficiency in required behind-the-wheel (BTW) skills such as operating a trailer safely on public roads through a variety of maneuvers.

CTDL 1040

Pre/Co-Requisite(s): CTDL 1020 Commercial Driving Internship provides the opportunity for an individual to complete his/her training with a company. The internship takes the place of CTDL-1030, Advanced Operations. Working closely with the school a company provides the advanced training which focuses on developing students' driving skills. Each student must receive at least twelve (12) hours behind-the-wheel (BTW) instructional time on the street/road. In addition the student must have a minimum program total of forty-four (44) hours BTW instructional time in any combination (with CTDL 1020) or range and street/road driving. Note: State law requires that whenever a vehicle is operated on public roads an instructor must be present in the truck while the student is driving.
